On the Occasion of My 3000th Comment

(Which happened on this post, by the way. And no, I won't say whose comment was #3000, even though I know you're all dying to know.)

It would be a lie to say that I didn't feel a little thrill of excitement to have 3000 comments. I felt popular, like people really like me and what I have to say. But really, if I want to feel appreciated, I'd rather go and read the 40ish comments on this post - the number is much smaller, but the value of each individual comment is immeasurable to me. So what does having 3000 comments really mean?

The amazing thing is that it means that you all - my readers - felt you had something to contribute to my humble space on the internet on 3000 separate occasions. (Okay, fine, some of those comments are from me, but only because I was responding to your own thoughts, so we'll ignore that, m'kay?) It means that you all wanted to join me in conversation, that you took time out of your busy lives to make a joke, or share your opinion, or lend support. And that's important to me - more important than feeling popular.

So thank you to everyone who raised a hand over the past year-plus. I hope you all continue joining me in my ongoing education - the journey's more fun together.

It's like the end of the sophomore year all over again, and not only did your friends sign your yearbook, but the cute kid from biology, the cuter kid from english, and the senior who you thought oblivious to your existence. Feels great huh? Congrats on all the comments, they are well deserved :)

Well, I think the only way to react to this post is to comment, so here I am!

I love comments! It means that someone actually read what I'd written! Congrats on the milestone!

It's hard not to comment when someone shares so candidly and so eloquently and frequently - so irreverantly! I enjoy reading you.

Wow, cool.

But how did you know? Did you count them? Do you have a counting widget? Do you keep a spreadsheet? Inquiring minds want to know.

Hmmm, I'm seeing a sign with something like, "Over 3,000 people...compelled to communicate." That's a huge achievement.

I'm late to the party, but you'll get plenty of comments from me:)

trina - ha, totally true. although, i think dooce might be the senior prom queen who really IS oblivious to my existence. if only i could get HER to comment...

guilty secret - excellent response. :)

hanlie - not only read, but read, thought about, and responded to what you wrote! that's why i think comments are so cool.

bette jo - sadly, i find myself commenting on really amazing posts much less often than i should. i'm glad you make the effort better than i do!

major bedhead - spreadsheet. is it a bit obsessive? yes. but it helps when i want to know how many comments i've accumulated over the last year and change. :)

amandaD - like those signs at mcdonald's about "over 1 million served"? i like what i'm hearing...

flutter - better late than never! i'm glad you're here. :)

Congratulations! I think you should ceremoniously present the 3,000th commentator with a special T-shirt decorated with one of your hand-made artworks. (I wear small and dark blue is my favorite color--I'm just saying.)

I've been lacking with the comments lately, but I always enjoy reading. :)

You've got me thinking I need to check this out. Is there a place on my dashboard that counts my comments? Isn't there a special award for the 3015th commenter?

Sexy Hexadecimal Man congratulates you on your bb8'th comment.

Hi Lara.... I have been very remiss in not commenting lately. It's been a major dental thing. But I'm back and promise to do much better... and maybe even post more often..I've been most, well, all of my posting in Spaces!

Congrats on your 3000th comment!! But I'm not at all surprised. Hope you're having a wonderful weekend.
