You Should Be Buying Me Wood

It's my fifth anniversary here at Life: The Ongoing Education. No joke - FIVE YEARS. I don't know about you, but to me, that feels like a really long time. And time is something I've been thinking of a lot lately, for a few different reasons:

1) I turned 29 ten days ago. I was in Africa, but the birthday came anyway, and now I have less than a year before I turn 30, which terrifies me to no end.
2) Tpiglette and I realized that we recently passed the 10th anniversary of becoming friends. We have now been friends for over a decade. Crazy, but awesome, because I love her to pieces.
3) Thinking about my friendship with Tpiglette got me thinking about being friends with J. A little less than a week ago was the anniversary of when we started dating... eight years ago. In early October it will be 10 years since we first met. And in late October it will be five years since we broke up.

Time marches on, and I am marching with it. Well, to be honest, I'm not marching, because I don't go in for marching - it's not a good look for me. I prefer to stride or saunter, depending on whether I'm in a hurry or not.

Still, five years feels like a long time. Maybe it's because I'm only 29 - five years is more than 1/6 of my lifetime, after all. Or maybe five years in and of itself isn't long, but it feels like a long time to have a blog.

One thing I've realized is that I picked an excellent name for the blog, if I do say so myself. In the first post, I said this:

So I considered the fact that I'm going back to school, and considered that I'm going into teaching as a profession, and got to thinking about education. And I realized that if we're honest, life is really an ongoing process of education for all of us, no matter what our career is or where we are in our life's journey. Hopefully, we're always learning and growing, as well as teaching and sharing our experiences with others.

I think it's turned out to be a blog very much in that vein, about learning and growing, teaching and sharing... a life education. And as with any education, some of the lessons were more enjoyable than others. Some were more useful than others. Some lasted longer than others. And some stank like day-old fish guts. But that's life for you.

As an anniversary / belated birthday present for me, come out of hiding and leave a comment - when did you first join the Ongoing Education? And what, if anything, have you learned here?

Love you all, five years strong,

I wasn't here at the beginning, but I was here pretty soon after. You had just gotten out of the hospital, and I remember sitting on my bed, reading backposts all the way to the beginning, and reading that very excerpt.

Happy Birthday, Lara!

I have been reading for a couple of years. Hope you had a great birthday in Africa. My Aunt is a missionary in Africa. It brought tears to my eyes last year when you posted your trip pics. Have been waiting for them this year.

I've been reading your blog since the beginning. I've learned FASHION! And other stuff.

I've been here since before there was a here (i.e. since Tween Kari, or whatever it was called). I've learned, or rather, been reminded, how important friends are in both hard times and high times.
