I asked some of my 10th graders what their expectations were of the class. The few who were willing to share said things like, "I expect to improve a lot in my writing," and, "I expect to learn to understand books better." Clearly one of my jobs this year will be to teach them to be more creative in how they choose to blow smoke up their teacher's ass.
So then I said, "Raise your hand if you expect this class to be hard."
Everyone raised his/her hand.
So I said, "Okay, now raise your hand if you expect that because of things you've heard from last year's class."
Everyone raised his/her hand.
So thank you, my former students, for so kindly spreading the word for me. Turns out the students walked in the room already terrified, and I didn't have to get that surgery after all.
Yes, I am surviving Week 1. It hasn't been too bad so far, although the dragging myself out of bed at 5:30am part is sucking WAY more than it did last year. More updates to come when I am slightly less exhausted and slightly more coherent.

I will be looping up with my freshmen this year. While I am looking forward to it, I am a bit worried about behaviors because I've had many of them since the seventh grade and I am the head class advisor. Hopefully my reputation for being a hard a** will follow me. Great blog, I found you through TenseTeacher.
I've been wondering how your first few days were going! Glad you didn't need the surgery! :) NOT looking forward to the waking up at 5 in the morning either!
Glad to hear. Wish I could be a bit better about updates.
and I dread getting up at 7am. 5:30am to go to work, I quit. I need another job
I'm glad it's going well. #prosaicsentiment
You've got a pretty good "I am SO disappointed in you that you are going to combust on the spot" look with your regular eyes, you know ;)
If I recall you kind of thought you were dying last year. Exhausted and incoherent is a step up, don't ya think?
