Dancing Dolls

Hey, Lara, weren't you in a show recently?

Why, yes - yes, I was. Let me tell you a little bit about it

For those of you who've never been in a stage production before, show make-up can be... a little frightening. Lady M likened herself to a Wild West saloon girl; as for me, I repeatedly used the phrase "two-dollar whore."

Here are all the places I went last week looking like a two-dollar whore:
  • Jack in the Box
  • Walgreens
  • Starbucks
  • Safeway
  • my supervisory meeting on campus
  • Taqueria La Bamba
  • the post office
And in all of those places, people somehow managed to keep a straight face. You don't believe the awfulness that is stage makeup? Look at this:

And it only got worse later in the show, when I put on the bright red lipstick for the Charleston number. In some of the pictures, I end up looking more like a porcelain doll than a hooker, though, like in this one with J.:

Once we figured that out, we had to take this picture:

Ooh, here's a whole set of dolls!

Lara and Lady M dolls sold separately:

Also buy the special Lara accessory, Aussie Boy!

Okay, talk of dolls aside, the show went very well, and I had a great time. Even though it was a stressful week because of all the rehearsals, it was good to be back on stage again. Thanks to everyone who made it happen!

I think you look great in the first picture. But maybe the makeup shows less in pictures. :) You all look so good in those Regency era costumes.

Anyway, all the pictures I've seen of the show are fabulous. Wish I could have seen it. Actually I wish I could have danced in it. I'll have to wait for the DVD.

Good for you! That's amazing. And now you may call me a two dollar whore, but your stage makeup wasn't all that bad, I have seen (and worn) much worse. And don't you get a little bit of a kick out of going into public like that and watching people look at you. Great, now you are going to call me a "dressed exhibitionist" too :)

Not only is your blog a font of thoughtful, funny reflections, but you ACT, too? You looked lovely - NOT garishly whorish! : ) What play was it?

Adding my own little "trickle"...er...uhm...comment :)

I used to love stage make-up. It was like being in another world!

And I bet you WOULD have pitched in to help with my yard! And I would have cooked you a fabulous dinner and told funny jokes!

One of these days you'll have to tell me where in the Bay Area you are. I grew up in Livermore!

Lara? I'm not going anywhere. I get enough comments on msn spaces to keep me around. And besides, I always get comments here from you!! And that's enough for me!

You looked lovely in your show pics!! But a supervisory meeting?? You have guts girl!!

Hope you have a GREAT rest of the week!!!!!

Be well Lara- I am thinking of you as I struggle with my 'what should I do with my life' thoughts...

dancing dragon - like i said, the red lipstick was way worse. we missed you at the show! hopefully soon you'll be with us again. :)

wolf lover girl - thanks so much!

lindz - you're right, there is just a little bit of a thrill going out completely dolled up like that and knowing peopled notice me. ;) it's just wondering whether it's positive notice or not...

proverbs - thank you. maybe someday i'll post a vid... we'll have to see.

aly - i wish you could! i bet you'd be a very supportive and appreciative audience.

sassy - i AM a pretty, pretty princess. worth up to $10 even!

aimee - yeah, he is a cutie. and was kind to wait around for me while i changed and gathered my things. what a guy!

organic mama - it was actually a dance show, rather than a play. i perform vintage and ballroom dances in the bay area. it's a fun hobby, and seems to do an okay job of keeping me in decent shape. :)

TSM - yes, i completely would've helped. hanging out over dinner with you would be a totally fun time, i'm sure. i'm in palo alto / mountain view, near stanford. my ex worked in livermore for a whole summer, though, at livermore labs!

r u serious? - good, i'm glad you're not going anywhere. i would miss you! and thank you for the compliment. fortunately, my supervisory and colleagues are very understanding - they knew i had a show, so they didn't mind the garish look.

tori - thanks much, kid. on both counts. :)
