I Know You By Heart

When I'm sick, like I am now, there's nothing better than to be able to lie down beside my mother, resting my head on her chest as she smooths back my hair with one hand, holding her other hand in my own, closing my eyes and feeling her chest rise and fall as she breathes in time with me. And I think how perfectly I fit there, and how she must have grown along with me, so that no matter what size I was or where I was in my life, I always fit there, like a missing puzzle piece. Once, I was a part of her, and in moments like these, I can almost believe that I still am, and I think that I would know this feeling anywhere, because I know my mommy by heart.

Who do you know by heart?

I'm sure it sounds hokey, but I know R by heart. Every little curve, bump, hair, and that odd set of freckles that look like someone shot a laser through his fingers.

Unfortunately, I also know my parents' bodies pretty well, as they're total hippies and didn't have a problem getting dressed in front of us kids. Eww.

I had someone once, but he passed away. Now, I think... There's not anyone.

My dearest hope is that my children feel that way about me - now and always.

My husband... Even though we've only been married just over a year now, I know him by touch. Right from the start we've just "fit" together, and I don't mean sexually. We were made for each other.

I don't feel that way with anyone, but I'm probably still just going through that teenage thing where I don't really "fit" anywhere. Someday I'll grow up... maybe.

Feel better soon!

Hi.
I found you through BlogRush.
You have an awesome blog here!
I loved this post.
You are obviously a girl with a huge heart.

The person I know by heart would be my husband. He really is my soul mate.He is the person who completes me.

Like you I know my mom by heart - and her ability to heal my hurts simply by being there or with a hug has and always will be one of the most valuable things in my life. Over the last 8 years my husband has also become my rock, part of my soul and someone who can wrap me in his arms and make all the problems dissappear.

You give a mom hope. Exquisite.

My girls and my Sean and the circle we make, it is my everything, filling me where I feel hollow, lifting me as I feel weary and lighting my way.

amanda - i already know, without a doubt in my mind, that you and your girls will have the kind of relationship that i have with my mom, no matter how old they get. it's a beautiful thing, and i hope that even as you lament the fact that they won't be your babies forever, you look forward to the wonderful things still to come. :)

I have not yet met my soul mate, but I know her by heart.

I know the way we would banter over brunch, the way we would cuddle in front of the fireplace, the way we would wrestle for the TV remote, the way we would grow old together, the way we would smile at each other at 80 when our teeth are going North and South, the way our wrinkled eyes would twinkle with mischief when our grandchildren are not around, the way we would fret over the twilight years that arrive too soon, the way we would say goodbye when Death comes calling, and the way they would talk about us with a mixture of envy and wonder long after we are gone.

Aw man, I totally GET This post. I know my mom by heart too, and when I am sick, even though I'm a married homeowner, I still call on my mom to bring me soup or ginger ale or toast....
