Putting My Foot Down

I came to a decision recently. I've put a lot of thought into it, because it is NOT a decision to be taken lightly. But I sought the advice of people I respect, thought it through, and firmly decided:

I will no longer shave my feet or toes.

I used to, but I refuse to do so for even one day more. First of all, I'd like to make it clear that the hair on my feet and toes is not that noticeable - it's not like I have hobbit feet or anything. On the contrary, the hair is pretty fine and lightly colored. Here's some photographic evidence, and I've helpfully circled the areas in question for you:

See it there? Yeah, it's there, just very lightly. But like, for example, the lady who does my pedicures always sees my foot and toe hair. And pretty much every time I'm in there, she offers to wax that hair off for me. I always say no, and I think she thinks I'm crazy for choosing to keep this foot hair when I could have it removed.

Here's the thing, though - I think our society already makes women spend WAY too much time and energy on body hair issues. Do you realize how much of our bodies we're expected to shave, trim, wax, pluck, etc. all for some fairly arbitrary standard of beauty. To be completely honest? I am sick of it.

Now, let's be realistic: I'm not willing to just chuck it all and go totally "au naturel" or anything. But I feel like it's time to draw the line somewhere, and I'm drawing it at my feet.

Will you still love me and my hairy feet?

Good for you! I have hairy feet too, and am glad to hear I'm not the only one in the not-shaving-it club.

Leave your feet (and toes) alone! Let's face it. Anyone staring at your feet is weirdo anyway!

I do have hobbit toes and no I don't shave them. But I do give the top of my feet a swipe. At least my toe hair makes my husband laugh, so it's good for something!

Shaving your feet could be dangerous. What if you cut a toe and can't wear cute shoes? Good for you for putting your, ahem, foot down.

I don't shave my feet - but then - I don't shave my legs either. I use an epilator (sp?) on my legs, and every once in a while if I think about it I'll take a swipe at those big toes. But really? Who cares if you have hair on your feet or toes? So many other things to worry about. People are weird.

I used to shaved mine too. But when I was in BKK last summer, most of the girls there don't shave their legs. So I think that I probably won't too.
