That Oft-Repeated Interview Thingamajig

Long ago distracted spunk did the interview meme on her blog and I asked to be interviewed. To her, I now apologize, because I should've responded much sooner. In fact, on PAPER I did respond sooner, it's just that then I kept leaving the paper at school when I was going to blog from home, and then I actually lost the paper for a bit, but now I've found it again and I'm finally getting around to blogging the responses. Yes, I really am. My bad, DS!

Without further ado, her five questions and my responses:

1. What's your favorite form of punctuation?

Definitely the dash. Frankly, I overuse it with abandon in my own writing, often using it when a comma would do just as well. But I like it and I appreciate my "voice" more with the dash - it gives life to my written words.

2. If you could relive any one day in your life, what day would it be?

Am I reliving it once and only once, or over and over again like "Groundhog Day"? Actually, I think maybe the answer is the same either way. At first I was thinking about the last day I saw my dad, when I said my goodbyes in the hospital. I'd love to see him again, and hold him, and that memory is such a precious one for me. But then I realized that even if I did want to see him again, that is probably not how I'd want to see him again. He wasn't even conscious - his body was small and weak, and his hair just faintly growing back in from the chemo. That's not how I remember him, so why relive that?

Upon further thought, I'm not sure I can name one particular date, but I would want to live one of my good, HAPPY days. One of those days where I'm standing in the kitchen looking at J. and feeling so much love that I almost cry. One of those days where I'm driving down 280 and looking at the foothills and just thanking God for His faithfulness. One of those days where I'm sitting with a girlfriend and we're laughing so hard that our abs start aching and tears are streaming down our cheeks. Where nothing huge is going on, but everything just feels RIGHT. That's the kind of day I would like to relive.

3. What do you think it would take for you to stop blogging?

Unclear. My gut reaction was, "For me to stop wanting to blog." Blogging has saved my life in the past, and I needed it so desperately at the time; even though I don't need it that way anymore, I need to know that it's there in case I *do* start needing it again. If my administration mandated that I stop, I'd have a tough decision to make. I don't honestly know what I'd decide. But I feel called to my work strongly enough that that might do it. Let's cross our fingers that doesn't happen, yeah?

4. Have you ever had an "almost" moment - where it seemed like things were just about to start but they never actually did? Job-wise, relationship-wise, friend-wise, etc.

I guess I feel that way to some extent about both New Boy and Batman. It was like we were together just long enough for me to be almost in love - almost sure that it could the real thing. And then they left. Such disappointments...

5. What would your dream bathroom look like?

Well one thing it would definitely have is a BIG bathtub. I really enjoy soothing stressed and sore muscles with a warm bubble bath, but the tiny tubs drive me nuts. I have long legs, and I'd like to stretch them out in some comfort.

I'd like a vanity table and a mirror, too, where I could sit to do my make-up and hair before an evening out, and a shower with a high shower head with a large surface area - I don't like when the water only hits three inches of me at a time.

I don't have a strong preference for colors, but I would like nice photos on the walls. Not of people, 'cause I think that's a little weird, but flowers or other inanimates would be nice.

Thanks for the questions, distracted spunk! And now, if any of you would like me to send you a list of interview questions, leave a comment here (and make sure I have your email address). I'll give you some interesting ones, I promise... Muahahahaha!

P.S. For those wondering what I decided about Spirit Week, you'll have to wait for the pictures. Just know that they will be totally awesome. :)

I'm a BIG fan of the dash too! Don't think I want anyone to give me a list of questions. It requires introspective thinking and I'm not great at that these days.

I like the colon: when it's used properly, it packs a wallop. A semicolon is almost as good; and as it is more subtle than the colon, it can be used more frequently. Graham Greene was a master of the colon; and John Irving, the semicolon. The mistress of the dash - I cannot hope here to illustrate her finesse with it - was of course Emily Dickenson. I don't care for the exclamation mark, but we might as well note that Tom Wolfe uses it unsparingly! T.S. Eliot used the question mark with a poetic mastery rivaling Dickenson's use of the dash, no?

Oooh, I'd like some questions. Though I probably won't answer them right away; I just did Mrs. Chili's interview questions. I'll hold on to yours for a few weeks, but just think of the anticipation that will build!

Am in just partially-observant, or did your bed just change colors?

That was supposed to be, "am I..."

Crap. It's me. I went back and looked AFTER I posted that (one of my problems - speaking too soon) and realize it's always been red, it's just sometimes jumbled. Well, I LIKE it.

And I like that it's often-jumbled. Makes me feel a bit more normal. Or at least, symbiant. Although "sympathetic" might be a little less scary.

I would like questions, too, please. If that doesn't overload your somewhat strained schedule too much.

And I also wanted to say that I really like your hair down. It looks so pretty that way. And wow, I totally just channeled my mother. Sorry 'bout that. :)

Oh, I LOVE the dash! I use (overuse) it also! I wouldn't mind questions... although I totally get being too busy to get to all of us so I won't be insulted if I don't hear from you! :)

Do you make a distinction between the long dash and the short dash (or the em dash and the en dash, as they're sometimes called)? I used to, but now feel like the distinction is so pedagogical that I come across as a pretentious bastard when I make an issue out of it. I mean, substituting one for the other seldom affects the meaning of a phrase.

I'd have a tough time with Question 2. I'm not terribly fond of reliving a day. I'd prefer to face a brand new day everyday.

I'm partial to the double dash myself -- it adds drama.

Been a long time since I was here last... sorry bout that (oh, did I mention I'm fond of ellipsis points too? Yeah, thought so.)
